Jean Bond Brown joined Timoney Knox as an Associate in 2004. Before joining the Firm, she served as a law clerk for The Honorable Thomas N. O'Neill, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She focuses her practice on trusts and estates, business law and family law. Ms. Brown has a particular interest in advising families whose members include those with special needs.
Representative matters handled by Ms. Brown would include the following:
- Suggested and obtained court approval for distribution of $100,000 of a birth trauma settlement which netted in excess of $4 million to the twin of the child with disabilities. Drafted and implemented a minor's trust for the benefit of the twin, which is projected to be sufficient to pay the twin's college tuition years down the road.
- Counseled nursing home resident and Medicaid recipient who received modest personal injury settlement of her options for use of the funds in compliance with all Medicaid rules and regulations. Counseling ensured that the client could avoid a loss of Medicaid, if she chose. The Client ultimately decided to use the majority of her funds to privately pay for her nursing home care, with full knowledge of her options and her plan for successfully re-applying for Medicaid.
- Advised many individuals and couples regarding their estate planning needs and options. Drafted and oversaw the execution of documents that best met the client's needs.
- Counseled two adults, co-agents under their disabled father's power of attorney, regarding the practical ways they could carry out their duties and ensure that their father's Medicaid application would be approved at the appropriate time.
- Represented an Executrix who began administration of her family member's estate on her own and had became overwhelmed and confused. Advised the Executrix about her duties with regard to the estate's troubled piece of real estate. Successfully brought administration of the estate to completion.
- When dealing with personal injury settlement on behalf of recently brain injured married mother, suggested a unique trust which is irrevocable for two years, at which time it can be dissolved or converted to another type of trust (most likely a special needs trust) with court approval. DPW affirmed that it would have no problem with conversion of the particular trust, if appropriate. The Court approved the 2-year irrevocable trust. One year has passed and during the next year her agent under her power of attorney (executed before the accident) will decide how the trust will be handled at the 2 year mark.
- Negotiated successful sale of client's corporate assets for $5 million, which involved not only the outright purchase of assets, but also the resolution of issues related to real estate, lease assumptions, UCC terminations and employment contracts.
Ms. Brown graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, with a degree in government, and magna cum laude from the Villanova University School of Law, Villanova, Pennsylvania.
